COMPUTERS MASTERMIND CITY TRAFFIC PLAN

A COMPUTER, CONTROLLING TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN TORONTO, REDUCES TRAFFIC DELAY BY AS MUCH AS 28 PER CENT. EVENTUALLY THE COMPUTER WILL OPERATE 1000 TRAFFIC LIGHTS. THE BASIC COMPONENT OF THE COMPUTER IS THE TRAFFIC PREDICTION MODEL. THE COMPUTER ALSO COLLECTS DATA ON TRAFFIC CONGESTION, NUMBER OF VEHICLES AND TRIP PATTERNS. A TRANSPORTATION PLAN BASED ON THIS DATA CALLS FOR AN EXPRESSWAY SYSTEM OF 197 MILES, AN ARTERIAL GRID OF 908 MILES, A RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM OF 30 1/2 MILES, AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF COMMUTER PARKING LOTS. THE OVERALL SYSTEM WILL RESULT IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION SAVINGS AND A REDUCTION IN TRAVEL TIME. /CGRA/
