Concept of the Slovenian maritime affairs
Pojam pomorstva u Sloveniji
In order to presents its comprehensive meaning, this paper first defines the semantic concept of maritime affairs, then it goes on to provide the historical view of the Mediterranean, so as to understand how some of the most ancient civilizations flourished there. Next, the importance of the sea to the economic, political, social and cultural life of different nations is presented, followed by the current issues of maritime affairs in the European Union (EU). A particular focus is given to the Mediterranean region being an enclosed and heavily marine-exploited sea. Recent efforts of the European Commission encouraging a far-reaching reorganization of maritime affairs in Europe by integrating maritime policy for the EU and exploring synergies to avoid overlaps between the existing policies that deal with sea-related issues are pointed out. Finally, Slovenia is placed in this context by showing excellent opportunities the Slovenian presidency offers in order to reconsider its own long-neglected maritime policy.
