MEASURING BRAKE STOPPING POWER
FOUR LABORATORY TEST MACHINES, USED TO MEASURE THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION OF BRAKE LININGS, ARE DESCRIBED: DUAL-END INERTIA DYNAMOMETER, FRICTION ASSESSMENT SCREENING TEST MACHINE, FRICTION MATERIALS TEST MACHINE, AND THE GIRLING SCALE DYNAMOMETER. IN RECORDING THE FRICTION FORCE, TEMPERATURE WAS MEASURED USING A THERMOCOUPLE BURIED IN THE BRAKE DISC. THE CORRELATION OF TEST RESULTS AND ACTUAL SERVICE WAS HIGHEST FOR THE DUAL-END INERTIA DYNAMOMETER.
