HONKING AT THE INTERSECTION: A REPLICATION AND EXTENSION
THE WOMAN DRIVER STEROTYPE WAS ASSESSED BY VARYING THE SEX OF A DRIVER WHO BLOCKED TRAFFIC BY NOT RESPONDING WHEN THE TRAFFIC LIGHT SHIFTED FROM RED TO GREEN. CONDITIONS OF AN EARLIER STUDY BY DOOB AND GROSS (J. SOC. PSYCHOL., 1968, 76, 213-218) WERE REPLICATED IN REGARD TO STATUS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL CAR AND SEX OF FRUSTRATED DRIVER. RESULTS INDICATE THAT BOTH MALE AND FEMALE DRIVERS WERE MORE LIKELY TO HONK AT A WOMAN DRIVER THAN AT A MAN DRIVER UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS OF IMPEDIMENT, SUGGESTING THAT THE STEROTYPE OF WOMEN DRIVERS IS COMMONLY HELD BY BOTH SEXES. /AUTHOR/
