SOURCES AND MEASUREMENT OF HIGHWAY NOISE
THIS ARTICLE IS AN OUTGROWTH OF LIBRARY RESEARCH CONDUCTED IN THE PREPARATION OF A RESEARCH PROPOSAL IN THE AREA OF HIGHWAY NOISE MEASUREMENT AND THE TECHNIQUES WHICH CAN BE UTILIZED TO REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TRAFFIC NOISE ON ADJACENT PROPERTY. SOURCES, MEASUREMENT AND PROBLEMS ARE DISCUSSED. THE "A" WEIGHTED NETWORK OF A PRECISION SOUND LEVEL METER (DBA) IS PROBABLY THE BEST MEANS OF PHYSICALLY MEASURING THE NOISE LEVEL WHEN IT IS DESIRABLE TO EVALUATE THE DEGREE OF ANNOYANCE ASSOCIATED WITH HIGHWAY TRAFFIC NOISE. A REDUCTION OF 10 DECIBELS "A" IN THE NOISE LEVEL OF VEHICLES COULD REDUCE THE NOISE PROBLEM BY AS MUCH AS 90 PERCENT. /AUTHOR/
