PEDESTRIAN PRECINCT IN BOLTON
THE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF A CENTRAL SHOPPING AREA FOR PEDESTRIANS ONLY, IN BOLTON, ENGLAND IS PRESENTED. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FIRST STAGE OF THIS PLAN HAS BEEN IN EFFECT ABOUT A YEAR. A SURVEY OF SHOPPERS' REACTIONS INDICATED THAT 76% PREFERRED THE PEDESTRIAN AREA WITHOUT TRAFFIC. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESS INVOLVED, THE PRELIMINARY SURVEYS, AND THE DESIGN OF THE TRAFFIC-FREE PRECINCT SCHEME. /AUTHOR/
