Durability of In-situ Pipe Repair

The Florida Department of Transportation constructs, manages and maintains a significant portion of the pipe infrastructure system in the state of Florida, which results in significant investment of time and funds each year. Finding and implementing the most effective repair methods is vital to utilizing the available resources effectively. The goal of the following research document is to identify these repair methods and the situations in which they are most successful, enhancing the durability and effectiveness of the entire pipe networks. The research team conducted a full literature review detailing pipe repair methods and solutions, describing their use, longevity and efficiency. After the completion of the literature review, commonly used repair methods were identified, and associated drainage pipe repairs throughout the state were investigated while compiling a database of the pipe repairs completed during the past fifteen years. From this database, the selected repair sites were identified based on four major repair types for review. The research team conducted sixteen pipe inspections using closed-circuit television (CCTV) video recording and obtained soil samples at repair sites to observe the longevity and ultimate effectiveness of the existing repairs. Based on the analysis of the 15 years of observed data and existing literature, recommendations for utilization of the various repair types were created, which can enhance and update the current Pipe Repair Matrix used by the Florida Department of Transportation to determine effective repairs for certain situations.
