THE EFFECT OF MUDFLAPS ON THE SPRAYING WATER THROWN UP BY MOTOR VEHICLES (FRENCH)
THE INFLUENCE OF THE PARAMETERS GOVERNING WATER SPRAYING PHENOMENA IS ANALYZED AND VARIOUS PROTECTIVE DEVICES FOR USE ON MOTOR VEHICLES ARE COMPARED. INVESTIGATIONS WERE CARRIED OUT BY DIRECT OBSERVATION AND FILMING OF WATER THROWN UP BY, VEHICLES DRIVEN ON AN ARTIFICALLY WETTED ROAD, IN DRY WETHER. THE STUDY OF TIREROAD CONTACT SHOWS THAT WATER SPRAYING AND ESPECIALLY THE VEHICLE'S WAKE DEPEND ON THE SHAPE AND SPEED OF THE VEHICLE, AND THE DEPTH OF WATER ON THE ROAD. THE USE OF FLEXIBLE FLAPS BEHIND THE REAR WHEELS DOES NOT GENERALLY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WATER THROWN UP BUT TENDS RATHER TO INCREASE IT IF THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN SPECIALLY DESIGNED TO BE FITTED WITH THIS DEVICE. TO BE EFFICIENT, FLAPS SHOULD BE CORRECTLY SHAPED AND POSITIONED, HAVE NO SHARP EDGES WHICH WOULD CAUSE THE PULVERIZATION OF WATER; THEY SHOULD BE DESIGNED TO THROW THE WATER TOWARDS THE GROUND, AWAY FROM THE WHEEL TRACK AND AERODYNAMIC TURBULENCES, AND IF POSSIBLE SHOULD LET IT DROP VERY GENTLY ON TO THE ROAD SURFACE. /LCPC/FESR/RRL/
