Green concrete - an overview
Among all the materials used by the construction industry in India, concrete is by far the most widely used. The tremendous growth in the construction industry has boosted the demand for concrete in India. Billions of tons of natural materials are mined and processed every year for production of concrete, which is bound to leave a substantial mark on the environment. The recycling of waste and industrial by-products attracts an increasing interest worldwide to make concrete an environmentally friendly material. The production and use of such waste materials will protect the environment from degradation. This paper summarizes the various studies done on the use of recycling waste materials like recycled concrete aggregates and the use of crushed stone dust/quarry dust, waste glass and sewage incineration ash for producing concrete as a sustainable construction material. The review describes how properties of fresh and hardened concrete will get affected with the use of such waste materials.
