BUILDINGS AND TRAFFIC VIBRATION

NOT ENOUGH IS KNOWN ABOUT THE DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF BUILDINGS TO TRAFFIC-INDUCED VIBRATIONS. IN MODERN BUILDINGS, THE DAMAGE IS NOT GREAT BUT IN OLDER BUILDINGS, PARTICULARLY HISTORIC ONES IN CITIES, THE DESTRUCTION CAN BE SERIOUS. A STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE THE VIBRATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TRAFFIC AND ITS INFLUENCE ON BUILDINGS. USING A PIEZO-ELECTRIC CRYSTAL PICK-UP PLACED IN CONTACT WITH THE SOIL OR STRUCTURAL MEMBER AND A DIRECT READING VIBRATION METER CONNECTED TO INTERGRATING AND DIFFERENTIATING NETWORKS, READINGS WERE TAKEN IN THREE PLANES, MEASURING THE AMPLITUDE, VELOCITY AND ACCELERATION OF THE WAVES. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE VIBRATION INDUCED IN THE BUILDING TENDED TO LAST FOR SEVERAL SECONDS, THE MAGNITUDE OF THE EFFECT BEING GREATEST NEAR THE SOURCE. PERIODS OF VIBRATION IN A HIGH BUILDING ARE INTERSPERSED WITH PERIODS OF NON-DISTURBANCE, SO THAT IN A 19-STORY BUILDING THERE WERE ANTI-NODAL POINTS IN THE 6-8TH STORIES /AUTHOR/
