THE SOURCES OF NOISE IN MASS-TRANSIT SYSTEMS ARE IDENTIFIED AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS ARE SUGGESTED. THE NEED FOR WEIGHING THE VARIABLES OF AIR-BORNE NOISE VS. SOLID- BORNE VIBRATION, SUDDEN NOISES VS. SLOW-STARTING NOISES, HIGH-PITCHED SOUNDS VS. LOW-PITCHED ARE DISCUSSED. PERHAPS THE MOST EFFECTIVE MEANS OF CONTROL IS TO MASK THE NOISE SITE THE MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM DOWN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY FREEWAY. THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC RELATIONS IS MENTIONED. /AUTHOR/
