Merging Assistance at a Non-signalized Intersection with Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications

This paper proposes a merging assistance algorithm at a non-signalized intersection with vehicle-to-vehicle communications and considers the relationship between waiting time of merging vehicles and the penetration rate of the communication unit. When a vehicle with the unit in the through traffic flow has a certain gap to its preceding one, it widens the gap by reducing its speed to allow the merging. Simulation studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship between waiting time and the penetration rate by varying the gaps of vehicles along the trough traffic flow and the penetration rate. The results show that when the mean headway is less than 7 [s], the communication assists a driver on merging, and when the mean headway is less than 4 [s], the penetration rate of more than 50 [%] is required.
