LEADING AND LAGGING GREENS IN TRAFFIC CONTROL

THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO DEVELOP INFORMATION ON THE APPLICATION OF LEADING AND LAGGING GREEN PHASES FOR THE CONTROL OF TRAFFIC AT SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS. LITTLE INFORMATION HAS BEEN AVAILABLE ON THE PREVALENCE OF THEIR USE, THE INTERVALS, THE REASONS FOR THE SELECTION OF A LEADING OR A LAGGING GREEN, OR THE RESULTS. QUESTIONNAIRES WERE SENT TO TRAFFIC ENGINEERS IN CANADA, AUSTRALIA, MEXICO, AND THE UNITED STATES. THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN ANALYSED, AND A NUMBER OF APPARENT CONFLICTS IN PRACTICE HAVE BEEN REVEALED, SUGGESTING THE URGENT NEED FOR FUTURE RESEARCH. THE QUESTIONNAIRES HAVE TURNED UP A WEALTH OF INFORMATION WHICH CAN BE USED FOR FURTHER STUDIES, NOT ONLY IN TRAFFIC CONTROL, BUT ALSO FOR ACCIDENTS. /AUTHOR/
