U.S. OFFERS FREE AUTO SCRAP PATENTS

LICENSES TO USE RECENTLY GRANTED PATENTS WITHOUT PAYMENT OF ROYALTIES ARE BEING OFFERED FOR TWO PROCESSES IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE USE OF THE METAL IN MILLIONS OF SCRAP AUTOS EACH YEAR. THE U.S. PATENT 3,2273,995 IS A ZINC RECOVERY METHOD IN WHICH AN IRON COMPOUNDS CAN BE USED TO CONVERT THE ALUMINUM IN DIE-CAST ZINC-ALUMINUM ALLOYS TO EASILY SEPARATED FORMS. THIS CAN BE DONE AT LOWER TEMPERATURES THAN ARE REQUIRED BY THE DISTILLATION METHOD GENERALLY USED. BESIDES REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF FUEL REQUIRED TO RECLAIM THE ZINC IN RELATIVELY PURE FORM, THE PROCESS REPORTEDLY YIELDS ALUMINUM CHLORIDE AS A MARKETABLE BY-PRODUCT. U.S. PATENT 372,993 IS A METHOD FOR THE REDUCTION ROASTING OF IRON ORE. THE GOVERNMENT PLANS A DEMONSTRATION-SCALE TEST OF THIS PATENT METHOD WHICH WOULD USE THE METAL IN SCRAP AUTOMOBILES TO BENEFICIATE OFF-GRADE IRON ORES. THESE ORES, A FORM OF TACONITE, LACK THE MAGNETIC PROPERTY POSSESSED BY OTHER TACONITES NOW BEING DEVELOPED COMMERCIALLY.
