SHOULD REAR LIGHTS OF MOTOR VEHICLES BE COLOR CODED?
ONE OF THE POPULAR PREDICTIONS IS THAT REAR LIGHTING SYSTEMS OF THE FUTURE WILL USE DIFFERENT COLORS TO SHOW WHETHER A CAR IS CRUISING, COASTING, OR BRAKING. THERE HAS BEEN A CONTINUING EXCHANGE IN THE LITERATURE BETWEEN THOSE WHO ADVOCATE COLOR-CODED REAR LIGHTS, PARTICULARLY GREEN OR YELLOW RUNNING LIGHTS, AND THOSE WHO ADVOCATE USING RED THROUGHOUT. ADDING OTHER COLORS TO THE REAR SIGNAL SYSTEM COULD RESULT IN CONFUSION IN COMPLEX TRAFFIC. COLOR CODING SHOULD NOT BE USED IN THE NEAR FUTURE AS A MEANS OF TRANSMITTING INFORMATION IN MOTOR VEHICLE REAR SIGNAL SYSTEMS BECAUSE SOME ANTICIPATED DIFFICULTIES HAVE NOT BEEN STUDIED ADEQUATELY AND BECAUSE KNOWN ADVANTAGES ARE OUTWEIGHTED BY KNOWN DISADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES SUSPECTED BUT NOT AS YET ADEQUATELY INVESTIGATED. /AUTHOR/
