REGIONAL HOSPITALS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HAVE ORGANIZED A SYSTEM OF EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS. THAT PART OF THE STATE IS BROKEN DOWN INTO EIGHT AREAS, PARTICIPATING HOSPITALS IN WHICH HAVE THE CAPABILITY OF COMMUNICATING WITH ONE ANOTHER THROUGH ESPECIALLY DESIGNED TWO-WAY RADIO. A HOSPITAL CAN TALK TO ONE OR ALL HOSPITALS IN ITS AREA. EACH AREA HAS ONE OR MORE REGIONAL HOSPITALS WHICH, BECAUSE OF THEIR GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION, SERVE AS CONTROL POINTS FOR THE AREA. THE HOSPITAL COUNCIL THAT ADMINISTERS THE SYSTEM HAS AT EACH REGIONAL STATION A MOBILE UNIT AND TWO PORTABLE UNITS THAT GO TO THE SCENE OF A MAJOR EMERGENCY AND COORDINATE COMMUNICATION WITH THE AREA HOSPITALS AND WITH THE COMMAND POST OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY IN CONTROL. OUTSIDE AGENCIES SUCH AS POLICE, RED CROSS, AND AMBULANCE SERVICES OPERATE ON DIFFERENT RADIO FREQUENCIES AND CANNOT COMMUNICATE DIRECTLY WITH THE HOSPITALS. HOWEVER, STEPS ARE BEING TAKEN TO ESTABLISH AN INTERMEDIARY POST TO FACILITATE COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THESE AGENCIES AND THE HOSPITALS. A COST BREAKDOWN OF THE VARIOUS KINDS OF COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT EMPLOYED IN THE SYSTEM IS GIVEN.
