SAFETY FEATURES IN HIGHWAY LIGHTING SYSTEM DESIGN
THE LIGHTING SYSTEM GEOMETRIC ARRANGEMENT DESCRIBED IN THE D. H. O. TEST INSTALLATION MEETS THE MAJORITY OF THE MOTORISTS' SAFETY REQUIREMENTS WITHOUT SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN FIRST COST AND MAINTENANCE EXPENSES. VISUAL ENVIRONMENT USING SUCH A SYSTEM IS IN MANY RESPECTS OF HIGHER QUALITY THAN THE CONVENTIONAL SETUP. THERE IS NO APPARENT REASON TO INCREASE LUMINAIRE MOUNTING HEIGHTS BEYOND 50 TO 65 FT. (15.2 TO 19.8 M). THE IMPROVEMENTS IN VISUAL ENVIRONMENT AND LIGHTING SYSTEM GEOMETRY SHOULD RESULT IN THE REDUCTION OF FATAL ACCIDENTS. HOWEVER, A SUBSTANTIAL CHANGE CANNOT BE EXPECTED DUE TO INHERENT HUNAN CHARACTERISTICS AND PSYCHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL LIMITATIONS.
