THE TRANSIENT ASPECT OF AUTOMOTIVE LIGHTING

THE PURPOSE IS TO SHOW HOW THE TRANSIENT ASPECT OF AUTOMOTIVE LIGHTING CAN BE EXPRESSED MATHEMATICALLY. A RECENT FORMULATION OF TRANSIENT ADAPTATION IS APPLIED TO HIGHWAY CONFIGURATIONS. THE FIRST STEP IS TO CALCULATE THE SPATIAL ADOPTION IN VARIOUS POSITIONS ON THE HIGHWAY. THE TRANSIENT ADAPTATION IS THEN DETERMINED AS A WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE SPATIAL ADAPTATIONS TO WHICH THE EYE HAS RECENTLY BEEN EXPOSED. ONCE THE TRANSIENT ANALYSIS OF HIGHWAY LIGHTING IS PLACED ON A FIRM BASIS, IT WILL PROVIDE A USEFUL DESIGN TOOL. MANY HIGHWAY CONFIGURATIONS MAY BE STUDIED THEORETICALLY. A MATHEMATICAL FORMULATION OF TRANSIENT VISUAL CONDITIONS ON THE HIGHWAY IS AN ESSENTIAL TOOL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MAJOR HEADLIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS. /AUTHOR/
