1st WEGEMT School on Advanced Ship Design Techniques
West European Graduate Education in Marine Technology (WEGEMT) has been established to provide a regular series of short, intensive courses of instruction, particularly to help practising engineers needing to refresh or extend their knowledge, but also for postgraduate students and research workers with special interest in the subject offered. The first School, held at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne during the 3 weeks from 5-21 September 1978, was titled "Advanced Ship Design Techniques". The Staff of the School came from universities and industries mainly based in Western Europe. The School was divided into 3 concurrent courses, each with 3 modules: 1) Economic Design - with modules Ship Design Economics, Computer Aided Ship Design, and Optimisation in Ship Design; 2) Hydrodynamic Design - with modules Wake and Propeller Design, Aft End Design Propellers and Vibration, and Speed Performance at Sea; and 3) Structural Design - with modules Load Actions on Ship Structures, Structural Response, and Structural Design. The papers from the School are presented in nine volumes, with each module comprising a separate volume.
