STUDIES OF THE DESIGN OF EXITS AT GRADE-SEPARATED JUNCTIONS
THEORETICAL STUDIES OF THE POSSIBLE TIME TAKEN FOR A VEHICLE TO LEAVE A TRAFFIC STREAM, OBSERVATIONS AND MEASUREMENTS OF THE USE OF PARALLEL EXIT LANES, CONSIDERATIONS, ON THE CAPACITY OF EXITS, MEASUREMENTS OF THE BEHAVIOR OF VEHICLES LEAVING A TRAFFIC STREAM ON TWO-LANED, WEDGE-SHAPED DIRECT EXITS, CONCLUSIONS DRAWN FROM ACCIDENT STUDIES, AND STUDIES OF THE PERCEPTIBILITY OF EXITS WERE USED TO PROVE THAT IT IS ADVANTAGEOUS TO HAVE PARALLEL EXIT LANES FOR TRAFFIC LEAVING THE MAIN STREAM AT GRADE-SEPARATED JUNCTIONS. THEY IMPROVED THE TRAFFIC FLOW, CAPACITY, PERCEPTIBILITY AND SAFETY OF EXITS. THE RESEARCH RESULTED IN A NUMBER OF RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE DESIGN OF GRADE-SEPARATED JUNCTIONS; THESE 34 RECOMMENDATIONS RELATE TO THE POSITIONING OF THE EXITS, THE DESIGN OF THE EXIT AREA, THE DESIGN OF ISLANDS, AND THE ALIGNMENT AND CROSS SECTION OF THE EXIT RAMPS. /TRRL/
