TECHNIQUES OF IMPROVING URBAN CONDITIONS BY RESTRAINT OF ROAD TRAFFIC

THE PAPERS PRESENTED HERE DISCUSS THE WAYS IN WHICH TRAFFIC CAN BE RESTRAINED AND THE EFFECTS ON TRAVEL, ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND ON LIFE IN TOWNS OF DOING SO IN DIFFERENT WAYS. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF TRAFFIC PLANS AND NETWORK PLANNING IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES. PARKING CONTROL AND BUS PRIORITY MEASURES ARE SHOWN TO BE EFFECTIVE, BUT THE EFFECTS OF TRANSFER OF PASSENGERS TO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION ARE VARIABLE. ROAD PRICING IS REGARDED AS MOST PROMISING BY THEORETICAL ECONOMISTS AND LEAST ATTRACTIVE BY PRACTICAL POLICY MAKERS. MATHEMATICAL MODELS AND OTHER STUDIES FOR EVALUATING TRAFFIC RESTRAINT TECHNIQUES ARE DISCUSSED. THE CONCLUSIONS OF THIS SYMPOSIUM EMPHASIZE THE VALUE OF MEASURES FOR REORGANIZING TRAFFIC IN CITY CENTERS SUCH AS THE PROVISION OF TRAFFIC CELLS, BARRIER POINTS AND PEDESTRIAN ZONES. /AUTHOR/
