LUMBERTON TRANSIT - FEASIBILITY STUDY

THIS REPORT DISCUSSES THE FEASIBILITY OF A NEW BUS TRANSIT SYSTEM FOR A SMALL TOWN IN NORTH CAROLINA. A SHORT-LIVED ATTEMPT AT STARTING A BUS COMPANY IN LUMBERTON, N. C. (POPULATION OF 17,000) IS ANALYZED AND THE REASONS FOR THE THE ECONOMIC FAILURE OF THE COMPANY ARE GIVEN. A PRACTICAL PLAN FOR A TWO-ROUTE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN LUMBERTON IS SUGGESTED. ONE ROUTE WOULD INCORPORATE THE DIAL-A-BUS CONCEPT WHILE THE OTHER IS A CONVENTIONAL FIXED-ROUTE. MINI BUSES SEATING 18-23 PASSENGERS ARE RECOMMENDED. REVENUE OTHER THAN PASSENGER FARES WILL BE REQUIRED TO SUSTAIN THE FIRST YEAR'S OPERATION OF THE SUGGESTED SERVICE. SOURCES OF FINANCING ARE SUGGESTED AND VEHICLE MAINTENANCE, MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT AND CHARTER AND SCHOOL BUS OPERATIONS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
