BUSES IN CAMDEN A STUDY OF BUS SEGREGATION IN THE CENTRAL AREA OF LONDON
TO HELP RELIEVE THE PROBLEMS OF TRAFFIC CONGESTION AND IMPROVE THE ADEQUACY AND EFFICIENCY OF BUS SERVICES IN INNER LONDON, A BUS SEGREGATION SCHEME ON A 10-MILE NETWORK IN CAMDEN IS PROPOSED; THIS STUDY DEMONSTRATES THAT A GREATLY IMPROVED SERVICE COULD JBE PROVIDED AT MINIMAL COST. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE STUDY AREA AND THE METHOD OF STUDY WHICH INVOLVED SPEED AND TRAFFIC FLOW SURVEYS, A BUS-PASSENGER SURVEY, DESIGN OF BUS SEGREGATION SCHEMES, INCLUDING SUCH ASPECTS AS INTERSECTIONS, LOCATION OF BUS STOPS, METHODS OF PHYSICAL SEPARATION, DIFFICULTIES OF LOADING AND OF UNLOADING GOODS AT BUSINESS PREMISES ALONG A BUS-LANE, ANALYSIS AND PREDICTIONS OF THE TRAFFIC. A COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS IS INCLUDED WHICH IS CONCERNED WITH BOTH BUS TRAFFIC AND OTHER TRAFFIC. AN ASSESSMENT OF THE LIKELY COST OF IMPLEMENTATION, THE BAENEFITS TO BUS USERS, AND THE LOSSES TO CAR USERS IS MADE. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE TO INCREASE BUS OPERATING SPEEDS BY BETWEEN 40 AND 50 PERCENT AND REDUCE OVERALL BUS JOURNEY TIMES BY ABOUT ONE THIRD. THE GREATEST LOSS WILL BE THE SLOWING DOWN OF OTHER TRAFFIC AS A RESULT OF REDUCED ROAD SPACE, BUT THIS COULD BE REDUCED BY A STRICTER PARKING CONTROL POLICY.
