TWO-LANE RURAL ROADS: DESIGN AND TRAFFIC FLOW
THE GREATER PART OF NATIONAL HIGHWAY SYSTEMS CONSISTS OF RURAL TWO-LANE ROADS. IN SPITE OF A GROWING PERCENTAGE OF MOTORWAYS, TWO-LANE ROADS HAVE BEEN AND WILL REMAIN PROMINENT AND MUST THEREFORE RECEIVE EACH COUNTRY'S SPECIAL ATTENTION. THE REPORT EVALUATES THE COMPLEX DESIGN AND TRAFFIC PROBLEMS OF TWO-LANES ROADS AND THE MANY INTERACTING ELEMENTS SUCH AS NETWORK PLANNING, ROAD DESIGN PARAMETERS, TRAFFIC VOLUMES, SPEED, SAFETY AND OVERALL ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF AUTOMATIC MEASURING EQUIPMENT. THE MAIN CONCLUSIONS OF THE REPORT REFER TO THE DESIGN PROBLEM OF LOW AND HIGH VOLUME ROADS, THE ABSOLUTE CAPACITY, THE PASSENGER CAR EQUIVALENT OF TRUCKS, THE OPERATING SPEED AND SPEED TRENDS. SEVEN PROJECTS TO BE UNDERTAKEN ON A CO-OPERATIVE BASIS ARE PROPOSED. /AUTHOR/
