70-GRANSENS EFFEKT PA TRAFIKOLYCKOR
THE EFFECTS OF THE INTRODUCTION OF THE 70 KM/H LIMIT ON ALL ROADS OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ROADS OF HIGH STANDARD FOR WHICH THE SPEED LIMIT WAS SET AT 90 OR 110 KM/H DEPENDING ON ROAD WIDTH AND AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC) WAS STUDIED FOR A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR. THE ROADS INVESTIGATED COMPRISED ALL NATIONAL MAIN ROADS (RESTRICTED TO 70 KM/H) AND ABOUT 80 PERCENT OF CORRESPONDING COUNTY ROADS. THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS ON THESE ROADS WAS COMPARED TO THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS FOR A CORRESPONDING PERIOD WHEN THE SPEED LIMIT WAS 90 KM/H. A CONTROL STUDY WAS CONDUCTED FOR ROADS FOR WHICH THE SPEED LIMIT REMAINED UNCHANGED AT 90 KM/H. RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS WAS REDUCED ON ROADS FOR WHICH THE SPEED LIMIT WAS CHANGED FROM 90 TO 70 KM/H. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE INVESTIGATION TECHNIQUE AND THE ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS.
