An Integrated Model for Reproducing the Maneuver of Left-Turners Considering Dynamic Reaction to Crossing Pedestrians
Improving the safety of pedestrians at intersections is still a very demanding issue. Although several types of safety countermeasures reforming intersection layouts have been implemented, methods to evaluate the effects of these countermeasures quantitatively before the installation are not yet established. One of the main issues regarding pedestrian safety is conflicts with turning vehicles. This paper aims at developing an integrated model to represent the variations in the maneuver of left-turners at signalized intersections considering the reaction to intersection geometry and crossing pedestrians dynamically. The proposed methodology contains several stochastic sub-models which are empirically developed. This integrated model incorporates path model, free-flow speed profile model, gap acceptance model and stopping/clearing speed profile model. Considering that the safety assessment is the main target behind the proposed model, this study uses Post Encroachment Time (PET) and vehicle speed at the crosswalk as validation parameters. Preliminary validation results by Monte Carlo simulation shows that the proposed integrated model can realistically represent the variations in vehicle maneuvers as well as the distribution of PET and vehicles' speed at crosswalks.
