Estimation of Traffic Deterioration by Snowfall on a Korean Freeway for Winter Operations
The objective of this study is to identify traffic deterioration according to weather conditions such as snowfall and temperature. Weather conditions are derived from the Korea Meteorological Administration, and traffic data are obtained from a Korean freeway. Traffic deterioration can be represented through the form of a linear regression and predict a reduction in free-flow speed and traffic volume as weather conditions become worse. Results derived from this study are expected to be used to estimate changes in traffic conditions based on snowfall and to be used as basic data for establishing strategies for traffic operations during winter, including selection of priority, prevention strategies for traffic accidents, snow removal procedures, and any other maintenance plan.
