Railway Routing Problem of Hazardous Material Tanker Transportation

The routing decision of hazardous materials' tanker transportation in railway involves a tradeoff between mitigating the associated transportation risk and decreasing transportation costs. This paper aims to provide an evaluation method to help selecting a more safety route for hazardous materials¡¯ tanker transportation. First, the theory and methods for the routing of hazardous materials¡¯ tanker transportation are reviewed. Then, the features and factors for determining the routing of hazardous materials¡¯ tanker transportation have been analyzed. The factors include the distance, capacity, basic characteristics of the route, traffic volume and so on. The evaluation methods including the ways to calculate the weights and to determine the membership of these factors are proposed. Finally, a case study of oil tanker transportation from ChangXinDian Station to XingPing Station in railway is presented to validate the propose method. The numerical results show that the proposed method can provide a promising way to select a better route for railway tanker transportation of hazardous materials.
