Activated Minerals as Binder Stabilizers in Middle Course's Asphalt Concrete Paving Mixtures

Asphalt Concrete (AC) Hot Asphalt Mixes are among the most popular mix types used in the middle and bottom layers of the Chinese highway asphalt pavements. Activated Mineral Binder Stabilizer (AMBS) is a finely-ground activated raw silica mineral, which is composed of the waste by-product of the mining of the phosphate industries and other organic modifiers. The polymer modified AC20 (with 20 mm maximum aggregate size), designed using normal Superpave Mix design procedures, has a high coarse aggregate content that interlocks to form a stone skeleton. One of the key performance requirements of this mix is to resist permanent deformation (rutting). Early research results, showed that using AMBS to replace cellulose fibers in SMA yielded many positive effects in key performance indicators, such as the water damage resistance, high-temperature deformation resistance, low-temperature cracking resistance, and longer fatigue life. The objective of this research effort is to investigate the possibility and benefits of substituting a part of the asphalt cement (bitumen) content in AC mixes with AMBS. This paper presents a summary of such research and the test results indicating that the AMBS is effective in improving the laboratory performance of the AC mixes in which 10% and 15% of the binder content is replaced by AMBS. Substantial improvements in rutting resistance and some fatigue life increase were achieved. These results are particularly relevant considering the cost effectiveness of the solution.
