WRONG WAY 4-HIGHWAY REFLECTORS
IN ORDER TO ALERT DRIVERS WHO ACTUALLY REACH A FREEWAY GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION, CALIFORNIA USES REFLECTORS BETWEEN THE FREEWAY LANES WHICH SHOW WHITE TO DRIVERS GOING THE RIGHT WAY AND SHINE RED TO THE WRONG WAY DRIVER. ELEVEN DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS OF RED HIGHWAY REFLECTORS WERE PRESENTED IN 16MM ANIMATED FILMS IN THE UCLA DRIVING SIMULATION LABORATORY. DRIVERS' VERBAL RESPONSES AND INVOLUNTARY DECELERATIONS SHOWED AN URGENT NEED TO INFORM THE PUBLIC OF THE EXISTENCE OF THE RED REFLECTORS AND THEIR INTENDED MEANING. THE TESTS ALSO SHOWED THAT THE REGULAR PATTERN OF REFLECTORS NOW BEING USED IS THE LEAST EFFECTIVE TO UNIFORMED DRIVERS AND THAT AN IRREGULAR CONFIGURATION WHICH IS NOT CONTINUOUSLY REPEATED ELICITS THE MOST RESPONSES FROM UNIFORMED DRIVERS.
