Real Application of Cement Treated Mixed Recycled Aggregates on Road Bases in Malaga, Spain

In Spain the application of recycled aggregates (RA) in the construction of road sub-bases and embankments is growing. Some authors have studied the possibility of using mixed recycled aggregates (MRA), which consist of crushed concrete and masonry particles, in manufacturing cement treated aggregates, but there aren’t many studies on real applications of these materials on roads. The objective in this research is to evaluate the possibilities of application of mixed recycled aggregates (MRA) in cement treated sub-bases in roads. This paper includes an investigation of the properties of the used construction and demolition waste, the processing plant for the production of MRA, the manufacture of cement treated recycled aggregates, and the application in the sub-base of two stretches in an access ramp to a motorway in Malaga, Spain. The results obtained show that the implementation of some of these mixed recycled aggregates in roads is entirely feasible, and the benefits that it entails go beyond the environmental aspect.
