ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF HIGHWAY AND ROADSIDE GEOMETRICS ON MOTOR VEHICLE BEHAVIOR

A DIGITAL COMPUTER PROGRAM HAS BEEN WRITTEN, CAPABLE OF PREDICTING DYNAMIC RESPONSES OF A MOTOR VEHICLE WITH ADJUSTABLE DIMENSIONS AND PROPERTIES TO SELECTED COMBINATIONS OF HIGHWAY AND ROADSIDE GEOMETRIC DESIGN FEATURES OR UPON STRIKING SOME TYPES OF FIXED OBSTACLES. THE VALIDITY OF THE RESPONSE PREDICTIONS HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED BY EXTENSIVE CORRELATION WITH EXPERIMENTALLY MEASURED RESPONSES. TO EASE THE TASK OF INTERPRETING THE EXTENSIVE TIME-HISTORY OUTPUT INFORMATION OF THE COMPUTER PROGRAM, A COMPUTER- GRAPHICS DISPLAY HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO PRODUCE DETAILED PERSPECTIVE DRAWINGS OF THE VEHICLE AND TERRAIN AS SEEN FROM SELECTED INTERVALS OF TIME DURING A SIMULATED MANEUVER. SAMPLE COMPARISONS ARE PRESENTED OF ANALYTICALLY PREDICTED VEHICLE RESPONSES AND FULL-SCALE TEST RESULTS IN THE FORMATS OF BOTH TIME- HISTORY PLOTS AND COMPUTER-GRAPHICS DISPLAYS. RESULTS FROM A SERIES OF SAMPLE APPLICATIONS ARE PRESENTED AND POTENTIAL FUTURE APPLICATIONS ARE DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
