AUTOMATIC BRAKE CONTROL FOR TRUCKS--WHAT GOOD IS IT?
A REVIEW OF BENEFITS TO BE GAINED BY AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLING THE SLIP PROPERTIES OF TRUCK TIRES INDICATES THAT UP TO 40% SHORTER STOPS AND COMPLETE 'JACKKNIFE CONTROL WHEN BRAKING' IS POSSIBLE. A SIMPLE ALL-MECHANICAL DEVICE IS DESCRIBED FOR USE WITH AIR BRAKES. IT SHOWS 7-30% SHORTER STOPS, NO TIRE DEGRADATION, AND FULL STEERING CONTROL. DATA ARE PRESENTED FROM FULL-SIZED SEMITRAILER SKID TESTS. THE DEVICE HAS YET TO BE TESTED IN PRODUCTION QUANTITIES ON MANY TRUCKS UNDER ALL-ROAD CONDITIONS. /AUTHOR/
