AN INVESTIGATION OF INTERSECTION TRAFFIC CONTROL: THE EXPERIENCE WITH SLOW-SCAN TELEVISION

IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE AND TEST METHODS OF COORDINATING ADJACENT INTERSECTION TRAFFIC SIGNALS WITH EXPRESSWAY ENTRANCE RAMP METERING INSTALLATIONS, ONE COMPLEX EXPRESSWAY-ARTERIAL STREET INTERCHANGE WAS INSTRUMENTED WITH A SLOW-SCAN TELEVISION (SSTV) SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM. THE SSTV CONCEPT FEATURED TRANSMISSION OF FIELD PICTURES AT REGULAR SHORT INTERVALS OVER LEASED LOW-COST TELEPHONE LINES TO A REMOTE OFFICE. PROBLEMS WITH THE SSTV SYSTEM AND UNEXPECTED INCREASES IN THE LEASED PHONE LINE COSTS RESULTED IN A COSTLY UNWORKABLE HARDWARE SYSTEM, WHICH PREVENTED COMPLETION OF THE PLANNED TRAFFIC STUDY.
