FREEWAY OPERATIONS STUDY-PHASE III: INTERIM REPORT 2- ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR RAMP CONTROL
THIS REPORT DOCUMENTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPUTERIZED ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUE TO DETERMINE THE OPTIMUM METERING RATES FOR A GROUP OF ON-RAMPS. IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FRAMEWORK FOR THE SYSTEMS ANALYSIS OF THE CONTROLLED SYSTEM THE NEED FOR TWO SUB-MODELS IS IDENTIFIED. THESE SUB-MODELS TOGETHER WITH THE INITIAL FREEWAY MODEL ARE INTEGRATED INTO A SINGLE COMPUTER PROGRAM, RAMPCON. THE USER HAS THE FLEXIBILITY OF MAXIMIZING EITHER TOTAL OUTPUT OR TOTAL VEHICLE MILES AS THE OBJECTIVE. LIMITATIONS OF THE PROGRAM ARE DISCUSSED AND RESULTS OF A TEST SYSTEM ARE PRESENTED. ALSO PRESENTED ARE METHODS OF ADJUSTMENT OF THE PROGRAM, INTEGRATION OF FIXED-TIME AND TRAFFIC- RESPONSIVE CONTROL, AND INVESTIGATION OF RAMP QUEUE CHARACTERISTICS. /FHWA/
