BAY AREA FREEWAY OPERATIONS STUDY-FINAL REPORT; ANALYTIC TECHNIQUES FOR EVALUATING FREEWAY IMPROVEMENTS-PART I OF III: THE FREEWAY MODEL

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES A FREEWAY MODEL. CHAPTER II IS DEVOTED TO DESCRIBING THE MODEL STRUCTURE AND THE SIMPLIFYING ASSUMPTIONS MADE CONCERNING TRAFFIC AND FREEWAY CHARACTERISTICS. CHAPTER III GIVES A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE OPERATION OF THE COMPUTER PROGRAM AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING INPUT DATA. CHAPTER IV CONTAINS THE WORK WHICH WAS DONE TO VERIFY THAT THE COMPUTER PROGRAM WAS OPERATING AS DESIRED. CHAPTER V DISCUSSES SUGGESTED PROCEDURES WHICH WERE ACTUALLY USED IN APPLYING THE COMPLETED FREEWAY MODEL TO A PARTICULAR SECTION OF FREEWAY. FINALLY, CHAPTER VI CONTAINS A LIST OF THE LIMITATIONS OF THE MODEL, INCLUDING BOTH CASES WHERE THE MODEL RESULTS SHOULD BE QUESTIONED AND CASES WHERE POSSIBLY USEFUL FEATURES OF THE MODEL WERE NOT INCLUDED. /FHWA/
