ELECTRIC RETARDERS

THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE PRINCIPLE, DESIGN AND METHOD OF OPERATION OF ELECTRIC RETARDERS. THE DEVICES ARE USED TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FRICTIONLESS BRAKING EFFORT TO ASSIST THE NORMAL BRAKING SYSTEM OF HEAVY VEHICLES. THE UNITS ARE INSTALLED BETWEEN A GEARBOX AND DIFFERENTIAL, AND WHEN SWITCHED ON, OPERATE BY PRODUCING BRAKING EFFORT DUE TO THE DISTORTION OF A MAGNETIC FIELD BY A ROTATING MEMBER. THE SUBSIDIARY FORM OF BRAKING HAS BEEN FOUND TO BE OF BENEFIT WHEN FITTED TO HEAVY LORRIES AND COACHES, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY OPERATE IN MOUNTAINOUS DISTRICTS; IN THIS APPLICATION THE RETARDER REDUCES THE RISK OF BRAKE FADE OR EVEN COMPLETE SYSTEM FAILURE, AND ALSO REDUCES THE TIME BETWEEN BRAKE SYSTEM ADJUSTMENT AND OVERHAUL. THE PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE INSTITUTION OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, AUTOMOTIVE DIVISION, SYMPOSIUM ON AUTOMOTIVE EQUIPMENT. SEPT 13-14, 1972
