BRITISH PATENT SPECIFICATION NO. 1274049 OPTICAL SYSTEM FOR VIEWING AN OBJECT LOCATED OUT OF THE DIRECT LINE OF SIGHT OF AN OBSERVER
THE INVENTION IS AN OPTICAL SYSTEM WHICH CAN BE USED ON A VEHICLE, AND WHICH ENABLES AN OBJECT OUT OF THE DIRECT LINE OF SIGHT OF AN OBSERVER TO BE VIEWED. THE SYSTEM INCLUDES A BEAM SPLITTER MIRROR WHICH RECEIVES AN IMAGE AND DIRECTS IT FORWARD TO A SECOND MIRROR, WHICH IN TURN REDIRECTS THE IMAGE BACKWARDS THROUGH THE BEAM SPLITTER MIRROR TO THE EYES OF THE OBSERVER. WHEN THE SYSTEM IS USED IN A VEHICLE, ANOTHER MIRROR IS MOUNTED ON THE ROOF OF THE VEHICLE ABOVE AN OPENING AND THE IMAGE IS DIRECTED DOWNWARDS TO THE BEAM SPLITTER MIRROR. THE SECOND MIRROR REFLECTS THE IMAGE FROM THE BEAM SPLITTER TO THE EYES OF THE DIRVER AND CAN BE ADJUSTED TO THE DRIVER'S EYE LEVEL. THE SYSTEM CAN BE USED TO REPLACE CONVENTIONAL REAR-VIEW MIRRORS IN VEHICLES.
