CONTROL OF ATTENTION AS A FUNCTION OF RISK AND RISK PREFERENCE
AN OPERATOR'S CONTROL OVER HIS INPUT SOURCES--HIS ATTENTION--CAN BE AN IMPORTANT PERFORMANCE LIMITATION IN MAN-MACHINE SYSTEMS. A LABORATORY SIMULATION OF A CAR-FOLLOWING TASK IS USED TO GENERATE DATA ON THE SUBJECT'S VARIATIONS IN ATTENTION TO THE LEAD VEHICLE AS A FUNCTION OF INTER-VEHICLE SPACING. THE SUBJECT'S RISK PREFERENCE LEVEL AND THE RATIO OF THE COSTS OF COLLISION TO OBSERVATION ARE INDEPENDENT VARIABLES.
