QUANTIFYING AND SPECIFYING DRIVER BEHAVIOUR
DRIVER BEHAVIOR HAS NOT BEEN CONSIDERED A HIGH BENEFIT AREA FOR INVESTMENT OF SAFETY RESEARCH FUNDS BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULTY IN CHANGING SOME OF THE OBVIOUS WEAKNESSES. NEVERTHELESS IT WILL REMAIN AN AREA OF INTEREST, IF ONLY FOR ITS CHALLENGE TO THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES. GENERALLY, A DRIVER IS INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS BECAUSE THAT WHICH HE EXPECTED TO HAPPEN DID NOT IN FACT TAKE PLACE. HE MAY HAVE ACTED FROM LACK OF INFORMATION, FROM CONFUSION, FROM OVER-ESTIMATING HIS OWN SKILL, FROM INACCURATELY PREDICTING VEHICLE-ROAD REACTIONS OR, MOST OFTEN, FROM MISINTERPRETING THE INTENTIONS OF OTHERS. EXPERIENCE TENDS TO REDUCE THE FREQUENCY OF THESE CONFLICTS AS THE DRIVER IS BETTER ABLE TO ESTIMATE PROBABLE BEHAVIOR. TRAINING TENDS, IN THEORY AT LEAST, TO PRODUCE MORE EFFICIENT DRIVERS AND TO REDUCE THE ERROR BETWEEN ACTUAL DANGERS AND THE DRIVER'S PERCEPTION OF THEM. IF THE SYSTEM WERE PERFECT, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE OR OTHER FORMS OF FEEDBACK WOULD CONTINUALLY MOULD DRIVER BEHAVIOR TOWARD SOME IDEAL WHICH WOULD PERMIT A DRIVER TO PREDICT ACCURATELY THE OUTCOME OF EACH CHOICE AND HIS RELATION TO OTHER DRIVERS. /TRRL/
