PEDESTRIAN/VEHICLE SEPARATION ON PRIVATE HOUSING ESTATES
A STUDY IS DESCRIBED WHICH INVESTIGATED THE LAYOUTS OF PRIVATE HOUSING ESTATES WHICH PERMIT THE SEPARATION OF PEDESTRIANS FROM VEHICLES IN A WAY ACCEPTABLE TO PLANNING AUTHORITIES, HOUSE BUILDERS, AND RESIDENTS. THE PRINCIPAL CRITERIA OF ACCEPTABILITY WERE SAFETY, CONVENIENCE, AND THE SATISFACTION OF HOUSE BUYERS WITH THE GENERAL ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN OF THE ESTATE. PREVIOUS RELEVANT RESEARCH HAD BEEN CONFINED TO LOCAL AUTHORITY ESTATES AND MAINLY TO THE "RADBURN" TYPE OF SEPARATION. STAGE 1 EXAMINED THE EXTENT TO WHICH PEDESTRIAN/VEHICLE SEPARATION (PVS) IN ITS VARIOUS FORMS IS BEING APPLIED TO PRIVATE SHOUSING ESTATS. STAGE 2 CONSISTED OF INTERVIEWS WITH PLANNING AUTHORITIES TO FIND OUT THEIR AIMS IN REQUIRING OR RECOMMENDING PVS. STATE 3 WAS A PILOT STUDY CARRIED OUT ON THREE ESTATES TO ASSESS HOUSE BUYERS' SATISFACTION WITH THE ESTATES AND TO OBSERVE THE MOVEMENTS OF PEOPLE AND VEHICLES. THE REPORT CONTAINS RECOMMENDATIONS ON WHAT FURTHER ACTION APPEARS TO BE NEEDED. /TRRL/
