PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS
A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE, 1200 TO 1300, ARE KILLED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN SWEDEN EVERY YEAR. ALMOST 20 PERCENT OF THEM ARE PEDESTRIANS, AND, IN ADDITION, A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER OF PEDESTRIANS ARE INJURED, MORE OR LESS SEVERELY. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS WERE MAINLY CONCERNED WITH PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS IN BUILT-UP AREAS, OR WERE RESTRICTED TO SPECIFIC AGE GROUPS. IN ORDER TO GET A MORE COMPLETE PICTURE OF PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS AND TO CREATE A BASIS FOR ACCIDENT PREVENTION MEASURES, STATENS VAEG-OCH TRAFIKINSTITUT HAS MADE A STUDY OF ALL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS OCCURRING OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS DURING 1968. THE STUDY WAS LIMITED TO ACCIDENTS REPORTED BY THE POLICE IN WHICH A PEDESTRIAN WAS INVOLVED AND WHICH RESULTED IN PERSONAL INJURY. THE ACCIDENT DATA WERE CLASSIFIED AND ANALYZED WITH REFERENCE TO CERTAIN FACTORS E.G. SEVERITY OF INJURY, ROAD TYPE, SPEED LIMT, LIGHT CONDITIONS, WEATHER, TIME OF YEAR, TIME OF DAY, PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENTS, AGE GROUPS AND OTHER VEHICLES INVOLVED. THE STUDY COMPRISED 392 ACCIDENTS, 341 OF WHICH WERE CLASSIFIED AS TRUE PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS. ALTOGETHER 346 PEDESTRIANS WERE INJURED IN THESE 341 ACCIDENTS, 24 PERCENT WER KILLED, 49 PERCENT SEVERELY INJURED, AND 26 PERCENT SLIGHTLY INJURED. OF THE PEDESTRIANS OLDER THAN 65 YEARS, 39 PERCENT WERE KILLED.
