EMISSIONS CONTROL DEVICES

THE DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, AND APPLICATION OF EXHAUST TO THE DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, AND APPLICATION OF EXHAUST EMISSIONS CONTROL DEVICES WHICH ARE IN PRODUCTION, OR UNDER CONSIDERATION, FOR GASOLINE ENGINES WITHIN THE 90-180 IN3 (1.5-3 LITRE)SWEPT VOLUME RANGE, AND WHICH ARE MASS PRODUCED IN GREAT NUMBERS FOR PASSENGER CARS. THE DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS AND INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE OF THE COMPONENTS OF THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY IMCO SYSTEM, AS APPLIED TO THE ABOVE RANGE OF ENGINES ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL AND THE WAYS IN WHICH THE PROBLEMS WERE SOLVED ARE GIVEN. THESE COMPONENTS ARE A DUAL DIAPHRAGM DISTRIBUTOR, A NEW CARBURETOR, AN INTAKE MANIFOLD DECELERATION CONTROL VALVE, AND A THERMOSTATICALLY CONTROLLED AIR CLEANER. THE RESEARCH BEING UNDERTAKEN ON THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS TO IMPROVE THIS SYSTEM, WHILE RETAINING ACCEPTABLE DRIVEABILITY TO MEET THE NEWE FEDERAL LEGISLATION, IS DEBATED. IT IS ALSO INTENDED TO PRESENT INFORMATION RELATING TO THE CONTROL OF CRANKCASE EMISSIONS. THE EMISSIONS CONTROL PACKAGES FITTED TO CARS BEING EXPORTED TO EUROPEAN COUNTRIES WILL ALSO BE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. (A)
