How to Produce Universal Designed Pedestrian Spaces in Urban Area

To date, it has been implemented with emphasis on countermeasures for people with disabilities in Japan, such as so-called New Barrier-Free Law for UD. However, of crucial importance for “pedestrian spaces” is not merely accessibility in welfare terms but also diversification of mobility, creation of prosperity, and amusement. Believing that this is a new mode that is necessary for UD in future pedestrian spaces, the authors propose a new concept of UD. They set the next three elements as components of UD in pedestrian spaces. 1.Function (Network), 2.Mechanism/ system (Urban planning), 3.Device (Design). It is a new concept of UD pedestrian spaces that the very space in which these three items are accumulated and satisfied is UD.
