PATENT SPECIFICATION 1261231. (54) MEASURING DEVICE FOR SAFETY DISTANCES BETWEEN MOVING VEHICLES

THE INVENTION RELATES TO A DEVICE FOR INDICATING THE INTERVENING DISTANCE BETWEEN A VEHICLE FITTED WITH THE DEVICE AND A PRECEDING VEHICLE, SO THAT THE DRIVER OF THE FOLLOWING VEHICLE CAN TELL READILY IF HE IS TRAVELLING TOO CLOSE FOR SAFETY TO THE VEHICLE AHEAD RELATIVE TO HIS SPEED. THE DEVICE COMPRISES AN ARRANGEMENT OF PAIRS OF MARKS OR OBJECTS ARRANGED IN A PREDETERMINED POSITION IN OR ON A VEHICLE SUCH THAT A REAL OR VIRTUAL IMAGE OF THE ARRANGEMENT APPEARS IN THE FIELD OF VISION OF THE DRIVER. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN EACH PAIR OF MARKS IS CALIBRATED AS A SAFE SPEED, THIS SPEED BEING ACHIEVED WHEN THE REAR WHEELS OF THE PRECEEDING VEHICLE APPEAR WITHIN THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE PAIR OF MARKS. /TRRL/
