SPLASH AND SPRAY CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUCKS AND TRUCK COMBINATIONS
THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN THE PRIMARY TARGET OF THE SPLASH AND SPRAY RESEARCH PROGRAM CARRIED ON SINCE 1967 BY THE WHI SUBCOMMITTEE. IN THAT PERIOD IT HAS STUDIED AERODYNAMICS AND VEHICLE DESIGN, MUDFLAPS, FENDERS, SKIRTS, AIR DEFLECTORS, TIRES AND A FEW OTHER DEVICES AND SYSTEMS. VEHICLE SPLASH AND SPRAY IS SPEED RELATED WITH ITS INTENSITY INCREASING AT A RATE APPROXIMATELY 2.8 TIMES FASTER THAN THE RATE OF SPEED INCREASE, WITH THE CRITICAL SPEEDS AROUND 50 MPH. NO SPLASH OR SPRAY DEVICE CAN BE CONSIDERED SATISFACTORY UNLESS IT EFFECTIVELY SUPPRESSES VEHICLE SPLASH AND SPRAY YET DOES NOT CONTRIBUTE TO EXCESSIVE BRAKE AND TIRE TEMPERATURES. /AUTHOR/
