OUT-OF-STATE DRIVERS
VSDSS REPORT #15 IS CONCERNED WITH THE DRIVER CHARACTERISTICS OF ACCIDENT INVOLVED OUT-OF-STATE DRIVERS. ONLY OUT-OF-STATE DRIVER COLLISIONS WITH VSDSS STUDY VEHICLES WERE USED BECAUSE OF VSDSS DATA BASE LIMITATIONS. STUDY VARIABLES INCLUDE SEX AND AGE OF DRIVER, HOUR OF THE DAY, DAY OF THE WEEK AND SEASON DURING WHICH THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED, AND STATE OF ORIGIN OF THE OUT-OF-STATE DRIVER. THE DATA LOSS, BY STATE OF ORIGIN REPRESENTS A POTENTIALLY UNCONTROLLABLE STUDY BIAS. STUDY FINDINGS ARE BASED ON A COMPARISON OF SEVERITY WITH COLLISIONS OF NEW YORK STATE DRIVERS. THE TWO GROUPS ARE SIMILAR IN THAT OLD PEOPLE AND WOMEN HAVE A GREATER SHARE OF THEIR ACCIDENTS IN THE DAYTIME AND IN THAT ACCIDENT SEVERITY IS GREATER AT NIGHT. THE TWO GROUPS DIFFER IN THAT THE OUT-OF-STATE DRIVERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE YOUNG, TO BE MALE, TO HAVE WEEKEND AND SUMMER ACCIDENTS AND TO HAVE A GREATER SEVERITY OF INJURY TO OLDER MALES AND ARE LESS LIKELY TO HAVE WINTER ACCIDENTS. /AUTHOR/
