Keeping Workers Safe During Abrasive Blasting
Workers in the maritime and construction industries frequently perform open air abrasive blasting as an effective and economical way to prepare surfaces to receive coatings. However, costs associated with employee accidents, regulatory actions, or damage to surrounding property can add unnecessary expense to a job. This article provides a basic understanding of the minimum standards required in providing safe work conditions for employees when using open air abrasive blasting equipment. Federal worker safety regulations from Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations as well as from other agencies or organizations are highlighted. The article discusses the safety concerns involved in each of the three elements of abrasive blasting (the abrasive, personal protective equipment and the abrasive delivery system). A detailed job hazard analysis model for a blasting setup is provided.
