THE EFFECT OF BICYCLE PATHS ON TRAFFIC SAFETY
THIS REPORT IS BASED ON DETAILED ACCIDENT DATA FROM 4 ARTERIAL STREETS IN COPEHNAGEN. 2 OF THESE HAVE BICYCLE TRACKS, THE OTHER 2 HAVE NOT. A TOTAL OF 1127 PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENTS OCCURED ON THESE STREETS IN 1965-67. IN 307 OF THESE ACCIDENTS AT LEAST ONE BICYCLE WAS INVOLVED. THIS STUDY SHOWS THAT THE ACCIDENT RATE FOR STREETS WITH BICYCLE TRACKS IS LOWER THAN FOR STREETS WITHOUT SUCH TRACKS AND THE ACCIDENT RATE AT INTERSECTIONS FOR BICYCLE ACCIDENTS IS HIGHEST FOR STREETS WITH BICYCLE TRACKS. A THEORETICAL CALCULATION INDICATES THAT IF BICYCLE TRACKS WERE CONSTRUCTED OUTSIDE THE EXISTING ROADWAY ON THE 2 STREETS WITHOUT BICYCLE TRACKS A REDUCTION OF 27% IN THE BICYCLE ACCIDENTS AND OF 14% OF ALL PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENTS WOULD OCCUR. IT IS ALSO NOTED THAT THE ACCIDENT RATES FOR COLLISIONS BETWEEN VEHICLES OF DIFFERENT TYPES ARE LOWEST ON STREETS WITH BICYCLE TRACKS WHEN THE VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENTS HAVE DIFFERENT SPEED PATTERNS IN GENERAL. /HSRI/
