STAINLESS STANDS UP TO STRESS CORROSION

New austenitic stainless developed by Nippon Yakin Kogyo Co, Ltd, contains besides the ordinary amounts of chromium and nickel 1 to 4% copper and 2 to 4% silicon. The stress corrosion cracking resistance of the steel is similar or superior to that of 20Cr/34Ni stainless steel. In room temperature mechanical properties NAS126 ranks similar to standard austenitic stainless grades except that it exhibits relatively high proof stress. Results of stress corrosion cracking tests of several austenitic stainless steels, including NAS126, are tabulated.
